چکیده

Binary black hole systems with spins aligned with the orbital angular momentum are of special interest, as they may be the preferred end state of the inspiral of generic supermassive binary black hole systems. In view of this, we have computed the inspiral and merger of a large set of binary systems of equal-mass black holes with spins aligned with the orbital angular momentum but otherwise arbitrary. By least-square fitting the results of these simulations, we have constructed two ‘‘spin diagrams’’ which provide straightforward information about the recoil velocity jvkickj and the final black hole spin aBn in terms of the dimensionless spins a1 and a2 of the two initial black holes. Overall, they suggest a maximum recoil velocity of jvkickj ’ 441:94 km s , andminimum andmaximumfinal spins aBn ’ 0:3471 and aBn 1⁄4 0:9591, respectively. The Final Spin from the Coalescence of Aligned-spin Black-hole Binaries

Determining the final spin of a black-hole (BH) binary is a question of key importance in astrophysics. Modelling this quantity in general is made difficult by the fact that it depends on the 7-dimensional space of parameters characterizing the two initial black holes. However, in special cases, when symmetries can be exploited, the description can become simpler. For black-hole binaries with u...

Gravitational Recoil from Spinning Binary Black Hole Mergers

The inspiral and merger of binary black holes will likely involve black holes with both unequal masses and arbitrary spins. The gravitational radiation emitted by these binaries will carry angular as well as linear momentum. A net flux of emitted linear momentum implies that the black hole produced by the merger will experience a recoil or kick. Previous studies have focused on the recoil veloc...

Hangup kicks: still larger recoils by partial spin-orbit alignment of black-hole binaries.

We revisit the scenario of the gravitational radiation recoil acquired by the final remnant of a black-hole-binary merger by studying a set of configurations that have components of the spin both aligned with the orbital angular momentum and in the orbital plane. We perform a series of 42 new full numerical simulations for equal-mass and equal-spin-magnitude binaries. We extend previous recoil ...

Modeling Kicks from the Merger of Non-precessing Black-hole Binaries

Several groups have recently computed the gravitational radiation recoil produced by the merger of two spinning black holes. The results suggest that spin can be the dominant contributor to the kick, with reported recoil speeds of hundreds to even thousands of kilometers per second. The parameter space of spin kicks is large, however, and it is ultimately desirable to have a simple formula that...

Final spins from the merger of precessing binary black holes

The inspiral of binary black holes is governed by gravitational radiation reaction at binary separations r & 1000M, yet it is too computationally expensive to begin numerical-relativity simulations with initial separations r * 10M. Fortunately, binary evolution between these separations is well described by postNewtonian equations of motion. We examine how this post-Newtonian evolution affects ...
